Bhutan Yoga Retreat

4th - 14th May 2025

Bhutan is one of the least visited countries and is the last of the small, hidden Buddhist kingdoms in the Himalayas to unlock the doors to its mysteries.

People here are the guardians of some of the world’s most pristine, wild and sacred places.

It has been recognised as one of the top ten global bio-diversity hot-spots and with forests covering more than 70% of its land, it is the first carbon-negative country in the world.

Steeped in legends and mysticism, the country has much in store that is reflected in its culture and people’s way of life.

Join us for yoga and meditation in the mountains and enjoy breathtaking treks with epic views, visiting monasteries and other places of interest.

About the practice, activities and more. Highlights include:

  • Daily morning practice focusing on building strength and flexibility in a balanced way.

  • Daily afternoon practice of soft healing yin and restorative poses, meditation and deep relaxation (yoga nidra).

  • All your accommodation is in comfortable 3/4 star hotels, in 4 different locations

  • Simple buffet style meals are served at each location

We’ll be travelling around Bhutan and staying in four locations during this trip. The first with breathtaking scenic views of the Punakha valley, the second surrounded by pine forests in the hidden valley of  Gantey Gompa, the third with views of the Tashicho Dzong, the seated Buddha and the surrounding mountains. Lastly ending in a luxury retreat nestled on the edge of the national forest and the quiet Ngoba village.

This retreat is for the adventurous yogi traveller.

You’ll need to be resilient and robust as we are exploring a lot of this beautiful country

We begin our retreat in Punakha where will stay for 3 nights, practice yoga and hike to Chimmi Lhakhang “Divine Madman temple” and also up to the Khamsum Yueley Namgyel temple which overlooks the valley and offers spectacular views. We’ll also visit the impressive Dzong here and learn more about the Buddhist history on Bhutan.

Then we head off to spend 3 nights in the Phobjikha valley. Phobjikha valley is a quiet and remote place, located in the mountains east of Wangdi Phodrang. While here we will visit the great monastery of Gangtey, established in the 17th century and hike a beautiful nature trail in the valley. We will practice mindfulness and meditation here and also have time to book massages and relax in our peaceful location.

Next we head to Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan. We’ll stay here for 2 nights and practice yoga, explore the city and hike in the surrounding countryside. Our hikes here include one to the viewpoint at Sangaygang and another to the Dodeydra monastery.

Our last 2 nights are spent in Paro. Here we stay in a beautiful nature resort where we can enjoy the spa and relax after our hiking and travels around Bhutan.

We also have one last big hike to the infamous Tiger’s Nest Monastery, which clings to the edge of a sheer rock cliff that plunges 900 metres into the valley below, and is considered one of the holiest sites for Buddhists.

Practice level and suitability

James teaches in an open and inclusive way, with many different options and levels. Morning vinyasa yoga will have options for all levels depending on how nourishing or fiery you like your practice, but some previous experience of vinyasa yoga is recommended. Depending on our travel schedule, there may be some days when we will have just one practice.

You’ll also have a very good level of fitness so that you can enjoy the hiking.

We will hike between 2-5 hours on a number of days, mostly up and down mountains and sometimes at an altitude of over 2000 metres.
